Don’t focus only on the home page, title, tags and keywords

Keep in mind that when visitors come to your site, they are looking for something specific, so make sure that what they are looking for is easy to find. You can be the highest ranked site for specific keywords, which means you did a good job of search engine optimization, but even the highest rankings and a huge amount of traffic does not ensure that the people that visit your website will buy from your site. Once a customer has visited your site, you must be able to ensure that he is interested enough with your site contents, information, products or services to stay for awhile and even return often. The information on your site must be clear, easy to navigate through and must motivate the visitor to buy your products or services. If you sell more than one product or service, the various products can be on different pages, but make sure that there are clear links to help guide the visitor to ALL products they might want to purchase. By providing clear and easily navigable links, the visitor can easily link to each of the pages for the information they are looking for.

Understanding Your Target Customer

Without understanding who your customers really are and what they are looking for, it will not matter how well your website is designed, or high your search engine rankings are. An online presence in the form of a website can be either an extension, or even a replacement for, a typical “brick and mortar” store. One of the great qualities of a website is that you can get input from your visitors through the use of online surveys or questionnaires, or just ask them to provide their name and email address so that you can send them surveys, newsletters and product updates, etc. You can ask them about the selections they have made from your products. What is it about your products that they like (or don’t like). Would they like to have discount coupons for your products? Is the quality and cost of your products competitive? Are your shipping costs less than competitors? How about customer support? Are your responses to questions timely? Are the descriptions of your products clear and completely define what they are buying? What about guarantees and return policy? Are they competitive? The great thing about an online business is that you can ask your customers to fill out simple contact forms that will provide you with their, name, address, email, age, gender, and shopping preferences and interests.

Does your website tell your customers how to contact you for questions or problems?

The advantage of an online business is that it is open 24×7 and your customers can be anywhere in the world and still shop whenever they want. You should provide a link on every page to a contact page that gives your customers your complete mailing address, telephone number and email address, or better yet, provide an online contact form that they can email to you directly from your site. There are numerous reasons that customers may need to contact you such as general sales or specific product information or technical issues. If you do not check your online store email often, have your email automatically forwarded to an email that you do check often, or even to one that gets delivered to your cell phone or PDA. Finally, make sure that you make the actual checkout and purchase process as simple and fast as possible by providing several payment options such as credit or debit cards, PayPal, etc.
